Artificial grass is probably your pride and joy, whether it be a golf green, football pitch or hockey pitch. While it’s an excellent choice for these sports as it needs very little maintenance, there are a few things that could compromise your pitch. As a groundsman, you’ll want to be clued up on what these threats are. So, what are they?
Weeds
Despite most artificial grass having a weed-proof membrane, you’re still not completely safe from those dreaded plants. Airborne seeds can easily find their way onto your pitch and once they’ve settled it’s not long before they start growing.
Ice and snow
Another threat to your cherished grass is snow and ice. Strangely though, it’s not actually the cold that’s the problem. It’s removing the ice or snow that’s the real danger. If you try clearing anything that’s stuck to your grass you’re running the risk of tearing the membrane and this can be incredibly costly.
Stains
Unfortunately, as artificial grass is synthetic it can pick up marks and stains. These can come from trainer scuff marks or even spilt drinks. Don’t worry though, it’s easily fixed!
Maintenance equipment
Now you know what risks apply to your grass you need to know how to fix them. Luckily, there are many pieces of equipment used to care for artificial grass, but what are the best options for you?
Drag Brushes
Removing leaves, branches, and other debris from your green or pitch is a key part of maintenance. Not only does it remove the risk of mould growing in your grass, but it also keeps pitches safe and clear.
To maintain a healthy pitch all of the synthetic grass strands must be standing upright giving it that natural feel. If you remove leaves or debris using your hands and without a suitable brush, you risk flattening grass patches and encouraging mould or weeds to grow. This is where the drag brush shines. The strong wire brushes mean the grass strands will stand up straight and form the perfect playing surfing even after brushing.
Triangular drag brush
Remember that problem with ice and snow? Well, this is the solution! To avoid ripping the membrane you can simply drag this brush over the surface of your court or pitch. The shape of the brush will naturally push the snow or ice of the field onto a safe surface to shovel away.
Smoothing mat
If you’ve only got a light covering of leaves, or your grass is a long way from any of those pesky trees, then a smoothing mat is probably your best bet. Like a drag brush it’ll remove all that unwanted debris, the only difference is it’s a little lighter and more convenient to use!
