So, you have installed artificial grass and you are wondering what to do to make sure it looks great for years to come. Regular maintenance will ensure your grass looks amazing and stays clean. While it’s not as much work as living grass, artificial grass still requires some care.
Remove Debris
When your artificial grass is outdoors, debris will tend to collect on it. This could be branches, leaves or rocks that end up on your grassy space. These items are either blown in on the wind or tracked in on boots and animals. Pick up debris as soon as you notice it, as anything sharp could do damage.
Rinse Regularly
Your artificial grass doesn’t need watering, but it should be sprayed down at least once a month. You can do this more frequently if it is in a highly trafficked area. This will remove any dirt and keep the artificial grass looking fresh and clean. If you notice the grass looking dirty, go ahead and spray it down more often.
Brush High Traffic Areas
High traffic areas should get a brush during the monthly rinse with a garden hose. This will help remove the more stubborn dirt that has been ground in by shoes and boots. It helps make the surface look new again. You’ll want to use something called a drag brush, which is a large brush you drag across the grass. It both loosens the dirt and fluffs up the artificial grass. You can get handheld ones for smaller spaces or larger brushes to pull behind a tractor for larger spaces.
Removing Stains
Stains happen and when they do, it’s important to wipe up the spills as soon as possible. You can use a mild soap mixed with water for this. Use a rag to scrub the area and remove the stain. If it is particularly stubborn or is stickier, try using mineral spirits to wipe up the stain and then clean with mild soap and water to remove the mineral spirits.
With regular maintenance such as keeping the artificial grass free from debris, rinsing and brushing and removing stains immediately after they are made, your grass is going to last for a very long time. Regular touch ups and checks for tears and other issues that may need repairs will also help.
