Summer volleyball is a great pastime but getting the court set up can be a daunting task. There are a few key steps to follow to ensure that you get the best summer volleyball court without issue.
Find the Right Space
Finding the right space to set up a court is the first step in creating a court. You should make sure that there is enough space. Next, you need to check that it isn’t on top of a septic field or buried wires. You will need to do some digging, so find out where the buried lines on the property are before you start.
Prepare the Site
Something that is important to consider with summer volleyball courts is drainage. To make sure you have good drainage, it’s best to excavate several inches down and then add drainage and gravel. Once the gravel is levelled and packed down, you can top it off with sand.
Make sure that the sand is deep enough that no one will feel the gravel underneath. You should create holes at least 3 feet deep for the net poles. Net poles don’t have to be cemented in, but it does create the sturdiest net if you do use concrete.
Install the Net
To get the best net setup, you will need to find the right poles. They should be a material that will withstand the tension and not bend or break when stressed. Look for the ones designed for volleyball. Once you have the correct poles, you can choose to cement them into the holes or not. Then it’s time to add the tension ropes to hold the poles in place and install the net.
It can feel quite daunting to build a summer volleyball court, but once you build it, you will have endless fun with very little maintenance. At the end of each summer, you will want to bring the net inside to keep it out of the elements. Each spring, you can put the net back out and check that the sand hasn’t eroded during the winter. If it has, you can top it up and be ready for another season of volleyball.
