Anyone can throw up a hoop and call it a basketball court, but if you want to build a proper basketball court, there are a few things that you will need to consider. It requires some planning and the proper equipment to create the perfect space for playing.
Here are some important things to consider.
Where is your court going to be? Depending on whether your court is indoor or outdoor, a lot of things can change. For an outdoor space, make sure the concrete pad is flat and level. If the space is outside, check the surrounding area and see if there is anywhere that the ball could roll that may be dangerous. If the court is close to a road, you may want to consider putting up a fence to keep the ball in the court and not rolling into traffic. Indoors, you will likely have a wood floor and this needs to be slip-free and level. The size of the space is important as well. Is there enough room for a full-court with two hoops or is it a half-court size?
The court markings must be clearly visible. You can add them with paint or court marking tape, depending on your preference. Court marking tape is a little more forgiving when it comes to removing and replacing it, but it can peel over time. Tape is best for indoor use.
Painting the lines in is permanent and won’t cause a tripping hazard, but needs to be much more precise, as any mistakes will stay put. Paint is usually the best choice for outdoor courts.
There are a few things to look at when determining what is the best equipment for your space. Is there a wall that can hold the backboard and ring or will you need a freestanding style with ballast? Will a nylon net do, or do you need something more heavy-duty like a zinc-plated chain net? Take a look at your space and consider what challenges your court will face. Will the court markings and net be subjected to weather?
Whether your court is inside or outside, you will need a place to store the gear. Get something that will hold the balls when they are not in play so that the players don’t have to worry about them rolling away while they take a break.
